In recent past, India has witnessed some fire incidents in batteries of E- two wheelers. This has happened in different models ev (two wheeler) of some reputed companies.

Action on Incidents

Govt got alert, took the matter seriously & formed the committee to investigate the fire incidents. transport ministry also said that “if any company found negligent in their processes, a heavy penalty will be imposed, and a recall order will also be ordered.”

Design of e-two wheeler battery

Lithium-ion batteries are used in ev where ions are transferred between anode & cathode through a separator during charging & discharging to complete the cycle of battery. A Battery Management System (BMS) is used for the safety of the battery. BMS also controls current & voltage of the battery.

Probable cause of fire

- Separator avoids direct contact between anode & cathode. If separator is so thin then it may lead to short circuit which causes fire in the battery. -Avoid external damage -Faulty BMS software can't control the temperature of the battery. -Thermal runaway condition should be avoided

Committee's findings

The expert committee has completed its investigation & come out with following observations – – These batteries even have no ‘basic safety systems’. – There was no ‘venting mechanism’ for overheated cells to release energy. – The ‘battery management system’ was seriously deficient.
